Musings from the Mantis Mastermind:

President James Garfield asserted that “he who controls the money supply of the nation controls the nation.”  The fact that money and power go hand in hand has always been true; however, cloaked in ideology and patriotism politicians may appear.

What is not true is the view that those in power view the opposition as hated enemies vs. worthy rivals. Neo-Conservative Senator Barry Goldwater and liberal visionary John F. Kennedy had planned to campaign together to present the American people with their contrasting philosophies. The assassination of JFK prevented that from happening. Still, they were friends.

America has experienced divisive, even vitriolic periods during our brief history; one tribe is pitted against the demonized “other.”  We get lost in our righteousness and forget what the promise of America is and for that matter, what the founders of the great faith traditions taught us about civility, hospitality, and compassion.

Bipartisanship is treated as a dirty word by many. However, the consideration of different points of view has also been the norm. Even during the Civil War, Lincoln had his team of rivals. More recently, the examples of LBJ and Everett Dirksen, Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill illustrate the battle for ideas during the day and a friendly libation at night. Eisenhower, Reagan, Bush, Truman, Clinton, and Obama each had members of the other party in their cabinets.

This card is a light approach to the good fight, but also a friendly game among American icons. Red, white, or blue, it is an American original in any case.
